Positioning for the challenger brand

You're the challenger. Your homepage should sound like one.

HearAbility™ scores your homepage 0–100, reframes it with sound behavioral science, and hands you the rebuilt page — built for a smaller brand out-messaging bigger competitors, guaranteed to beat your current one on your own numbers.

What every challenger marketing lead lives

You wrote it. The agency rewrote it. Their junior team rewrote it again.

Nine months later your homepage is prettier, your budget is lighter, and your conversion rate is exactly where it was. The big agency sold you process. What you got was a deck nobody implements and a team that rotates off your account every quarter. You weren't bad at marketing. You were fighting Goliath with Goliath's playbook — and he wrote it.

The uncomfortable math

5s

All your visitor gives you to figure out what you do, who it's for, and why it's different. Most B2B homepages fail this test on their own customers.

13

Reframing angles we run your copy through — drawn from decades of sound behavioral science on how buyers actually decide.

0–100

Your HearAbility Score, weighted across Resonance, Motivation, Distinctiveness, Credibility, and Next Step. Honest math. No vanity gauge.

Your copy is technically correct. That's the problem.

When you're the challenger, "correct" copy is a death sentence. The buyer scans your page, sees nothing that breaks the pattern, and defaults back to the bigger name they already know. You didn't lose on product. You lost on positioning.

David didn't beat Goliath by being a slightly better version of Goliath. He won by reframing the fight — so it was on his terms, not the giant's. The product almost never has to change. The frame around it does. That's the entire game when you're outspent and outnumbered.

The Method

You're not missing words. You're missing the one idea they'll remember.

Most positioning advice tells you to "own a word." But the word isn't the strategy — it's the label. The real job is deciding the one idea you want a buyer to walk away with, proving it's distinct and valuable, and only then reducing it to the cleanest possible phrase. Get the idea wrong and no word will save you. Get the idea right and the word almost picks itself.

Logic is what you use when you want to be right. The angle is what you use when you want to be remembered. Buyers don't decide the way they say they decide — a truth sound behavioral science has proven again and again. We run your homepage through 13 reframing angles built on that same body of work, gated by Category Clarity and Self-Reference, and scored 0–100 across five weighted layers — to find the one idea worth remembering, then the word worth owning. Then we ship you the new homepage, built — not a deck.

The Score, Open-Book

Five layers your homepage is graded on. Two gates it has to pass first.

Your HearAbility™ Score is a 0–100 number, but it's not a black box. Here's exactly what we measure — and the two pass/fail gates that sit in front of everything else.

The two gates

Before any of the five layers count, a buyer has to be able to tell what category you're in and whether the page is for them within a few seconds. Fail either gate and nothing else matters — they've already bounced, and the score caps.

01

Resonance — does it stick?

Can a buyer repeat your message a day later without notes? Good positioning compresses to a few words that travel ("ramp once, hold forever"), names the specific fear they actually have (not "you might lose efficiency" but "the new rep quits before they ever hit quota"), and tells the reader something about who they are. If it sounds smart in the room but evaporates in the car, this layer is weak.

02

Motivation — does it make them feel anything?

Is there a real reason to act now, or just a list of features? The strongest version frames the cost of doing nothing — what you're quietly losing every week you don't fix this — because a looming loss moves people far more than a promised gain. A feature list informs; this layer is what makes someone lean in.

03

Distinctiveness — your ground or the competitor's?

Does the page carve out its own category and comparison, or describe you in the incumbent's language so the buyer files you as "a cheaper version of the thing I already know"? A modernization platform that says "cut your cloud bill in half without rewriting a single line" owns a space; one that says "better software migration tools" is fighting on the incumbent's terms and loses.

04

Credibility — does it survive a skeptic's second look?

Specific, concrete proof instead of round numbers and vague claims. "Reps ramped in under 90 days close 2.3× more in year one" lands; "we boost productivity" doesn't. Emotional punch with no proof reads as hype; this layer is what turns a bold claim into a believable one.

05

Next Step — is the action obvious and low-risk?

Once someone's convinced, is the next move easy and reversible, or a big scary commitment? "See your first report in 48 hours, no contract" converts; "book a demo" with no sense of what happens next stalls. Great message, broken next step, and the whole thing leaks at the finish line.

The rubric is published, the weighting is published, and we never show the score alone — it's always anchored to the conversion implication, because that's the number your CFO recognizes.

How It Works

What we won't do.

  • We won't park a junior team on your account and bill you for their learning curve.
  • We won't vanish for six weeks and come back with a deck full of opinions.
  • We won't hand you a 60-slide strategy nobody implements while the competitor ships.
  • We won't charge $30k for brand theatre that sounds like every other big-agency retainer.

What that leaves.

What the proof actually looks like

"The rebuilt page beat our existing homepage on demo-request rate inside the A/B window. That's the number our board cares about — and we got a working page, not a Notion doc."

A Toronto B2B SaaS team had been workshopping their hero for nine months. We ran the rebuilt page head-to-head against the existing homepage on their own analytics. The win wasn't on our score — it was on their funnel.

"Our copy was technically accurate the whole time. It just wasn't hearable. We didn't need a new product. We needed a new angle — and a page that proved it on real traffic."

Where We Sit

Built for the challenger. Not the incumbent.

You already have two options. A $100K+ strategy consultancy that hands you a deck and bills you for every revision. Or a $10K+ positioning app that hands you a framework and leaves you staring at a blank page. Neither is built for a mid-market marketing lead who needs to out-message larger competitors this month — with a rebuilt page, not another workshop.

Scores you, rewrites you, then builds the new homepage.

Buyers don't decide the way they say they decide.

Why this is in the engine: Most positioning fails because it sounds reasonable. The engine deliberately tests reframes your larger competitors are too slow and cautious to ship — the same counter-intuitive moves sound behavioral science validates for smaller brands punching above their weight.

Your buyer isn't thinking about your category.

Why this is in the engine: We rewrite for what's actually in their head when they land — not what you wish was there. That's the entire shift from 'logical' copy to copy that gets heard.

FAQ

Questions you're too polite to ask

Fair question. Honest answer: if you have a real homepage and a real buyer, the 13-angle engine will move your HearAbility Score. If you don't have product-market fit yet, no amount of reframing fixes that, and we'll tell you so on the baseline.

Fletch and Wynter hand you a deck or a test result, gated by a sales call and starting at $10k+. Kit.ceo and the diagnostic tools hand you a method and leave you staring at a blank page. We sit in the gap nobody owns: a free score, a $499 paid summary that credits toward upgrade, then three fixed-price tiers — $1,999 / $3,999 / $5,999 — and the rebuilt, validated page in every paid tier. Fixed prices, published.

Five layers, 0–100: Resonance (does it stick a day later?), Motivation (does it make them feel anything, including the cost of doing nothing?), Distinctiveness (your ground or the incumbent's?), Credibility (specific proof, not round numbers?), and Next Step (obvious and low-risk?). Two gates sit in front of all five — Category Clarity and Self-Reference: if a buyer can't tell what category you're in and whether the page is for them in a few seconds, the gates fail and the score caps. The full rubric and weighting are published, and we never show the score alone — it's always anchored to the conversion implication.

Then we keep working free until it does, or refund in full. The Conversion Guarantee is written on your metric — conversion, demo-request, or signup rate — A/B tested head-to-head against your existing page in a 60–90 day window with enough traffic to reach significance. It applies to Growth and Scale, the validated tiers. We don't grade our own exam.
